A good, concise jumping-off point for the one part of Obama’s speech that has the leftosphere in a fit: the business with “preventative detention” of Guantanamo detainees who probably cannot be convicted, but are still deemed (by someone) a “threat to America.”
I don’t have any conclusions right now. It does seem to me, though, that those most critical of Obama’s “preventative detention” are viewing these detainees strictly as civilians charged (or not) with crimes, not as prisoners of war.
I think it is fair to say that they are, in fact, somewhere in between current categories, and that any real solution is going to look messy when viewed in terms of this dichotomy. Anyone who claims the solution to this problem is simple, I think, does not have the solution. Somehow, we will have to muddle through.
For now, I trust the President’s muddling chops.
